Story - Kairi

So...here's Kairi! I don't really have much to say about his translation. Kairi is very curt when he talks, so until we get to the point where he's explaining his past, he doesn't really have a lot of lines to translate.

There were a couple times when his curtness was troublesome as he would drop pronouns or other important words, but given enough context I could figure things out. There's a couple lines where I had to expand a bit to make things make sense in English, but it's not the first time this has happened. I think I said somewhere in an early post that Japanese is a 'compact' language. And Kairi is a great example of that.

Actually out of all the stories I've translated so far, I felt like Kairi's was one where you really need to be looking at his expressions as they cross the screen when he reacts or speaks his lines. There's context there that just isn't in the text anywhere as the player is expected to be reading the lines while in the game, not on some third-party translation website! This is especially true when the line is just a name. When Kairi says "...OO." we have practically no context within the lines about how he feels as he says it. This particular example I'm referring to is a point where he's slightly shocked, but you wouldn't know it from the lines themselves. So I've never said this before, but I encourage you to either read these translations side-by-side as you go through the story in the game, or read them and then go through the story again to pick up on some of those subtleties that simply aren't in the text.
