I cannot even handle how adorable Toto is. His story was such a fun, adorable read. I didn't expect to like Toto, the dog thing was a little odd to me and I was worried the whole master-dog relationship was going to get a little...weird. But it doesn't really get weird. It's adorable, in both routes. The entire time I just wanted to give him pets and tell him he's a good boy.
There weren't really any problems with his translation either, just a couple notes on things that were difficult to get across in the English interpretation.
In the first chapter when Toto wakes up, he confronts the MC by saying:
「どうかぼくの飼い主になってください！」
「あなたしかいません！お願いします！」
He speaks really formally in the Japanese as he makes his plea for the MC to become his new owner. But the phrases are so short, it's hard to get his formality across in the English without becoming bogged down with unnecessary words. After that, he switches to a much more informal way of talking. But in the Moon Route, it goes a little further when Toto again makes his plea and says:
｢……〇〇ちゃん、ぼくのご主人さまになって……」
He uses the suffix '-chan' with the MC's name. It's cute, but this is the only time in the story when he does this. Any other time, he just uses the MC's name as-is. It's like in this one moment, he's trying to be extra cute to try and get the MC to agree. I don't translate suffixes, so I couldn't make that as clear in the English.
[Minor Spoilers - My Headcanon]
Toto apparently lost his memories from before becoming a prince. The story doesn't get into why though, which is unfortunate. So my headcanon is that Dorothy left poor Toto in Oz when she returned to Kansas, and Oswald (the Wizard of Oz), felt bad for him and used his magic to erase Toto's memories. But the idea of having an owner was such an integral part of Toto's life that even Oswald's magic couldn't erase it. So now he always looks for her. It's kinda sad, yes, but Toto's so cute and adorable that this is what I've decided on for his back story!
