Ch. 5: To Be a Fairy (MOON)

Sharon: “Gyaaaaa!!”

Sharon’s scream echoed across the desert…-

OO: “…!”

The snakes rushed towards us.

Sharon: “Damn! They’re just snakes made of sand! They don’t scare me!!”

Biting his lip, Sharon hacked away at the sand snakes with his dagger.

What do we do…

Each time the fortuneteller blew his flute, more snakes appeared and came at us.

I have to do something about that flute…!

Sharon: “Fairy!?”

Cutting through a gap Sharon had made as he took care of the snakes, I ran to the hill where the fortuneteller stood.

Fortuneteller: “…!”

Engrossed in the playing of his flute, the fortuneteller was too late to notice what I was doing.

OO: “Sharon!”

Grabbing the flute from the fortuneteller, I threw it to Sharon.

Sharon: “Nice goin’ Fairy!”

Sharon sliced the flute in two, and the broken pieces fell on top of the sand.

Fortuneteller: “You bitch…!”

OO: “…!”

As the fortuneteller reached out for me…-

Sharon: “I’m not lettin’ you lay a hand on my Fairy!”

Sharon moved as quick as the wind, and thrust his dagger at the fortuneteller.

Fortuneteller: “….ku.”

Sharon: “You better brace yourself, you bastard!”

Fortuneteller: “…damn.”

The fortuneteller held his hands above his head, and a sandstorm rose up, surrounding him.

In the next instant, the sandstorm stopped, and he had vanished…-

Sharon: “He got away.”

OO: “Who was he…?”

Sharon: “He said he was a sand technique user. That means he’s someone who can use magic to control sand. But…”

Sharon firmly shook both of my hands.

Sharon: “Thanks Fairy! You saved us! You really are a fairy! Now come on, make me super rich!!”

OO: “L-like I said, I’m not…and anyway, why do you need money so badly…? And why do you work even though you’re a prince?”

Sharon: “I want to make the town wealthy!”

OO: “The town…”

I remembered the sad-looking town we had stayed in the day before.

Sharon: “The desert is a harsh place. I want to raise money so we can get the equipment we need to make our lives easier. The

problem is my family is really big. They do everything they can just to get by on their own. That’s why I, as the first son with all the freedom, am aiming to get 1000 gold pieces.”

OO: “So that’s why…”

Sharon, who had always been so energetic, looked a little sad, and I felt a stabbing pain in my chest.

OO: “…I’m sorry. I can’t do what you want.”

Sharon: “Eh, it’s fine. So, let’s go.”

OO: “G-go…?”

Sharon: “Why are you actin’ confused? Until my fairy can grant my wish, I’m your master.”

OO: “Whaaat!?”

Sharon: “I’m sure your power will come back eventually. There’s nothin’ to do about it in the meantime, so I’ll go back to

guarding caravans and make a whole heap of money!”

Sharon’s white teeth flashed as he smiled cheerfully.

H-he still thinks I’m a fairy!?

Sharon: “Come on, let’s go, my Fairy!!”

Beneath the sun as it beat down on the vast desert, I looked at Sharon’s smiling face, and wished I really was a fairy.
